UK Government Crack Down on Vaping Marketing to Children
The government has promised to crack down on the marketing of vaping products to children after a charity revealed that the number of children using vapes in the past three years has tripled.
According to Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), 20.5% of youngsters aged between 11 and 17 have tried vaping in 2023, up from 6.7% in 2020.
Child Targeting
The charity has warned that the vaping industry is targeting children with colourful and sweet flavoured products that are designed to appeal to them. ASH has also called for the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-liquids and to introduce stricter regulations on the marketing of vaping products.
This has led to a few vape manufacturers to come out and release statements, such as popular vape maker Supreme. Supreme recently stated that it will stop making brightly coloured products and bring in plain packaging with age-appropriate flavours.
The government has said that it is committed to tackling the issue of underage vaping and that it will be introducing new measures to crack down on the marketing of vaping products to children.
New UK Vape Laws
The new measures will include:
- A ban on the sale of sweet flavoured and sweet designed e-liquids to under-18s
- A ban on the advertising of vaping products in places where children are likely to see them, such as on television and in social media
- Stricter regulations on the packaging of vaping products, which will make it clear that they are not suitable for children
The government has also said that it will be working with retailers to ensure that they are complying with the new regulations. Any shop found selling illegal vapes can face on-the-spot fines.
The new measures have been welcomed by ASH, which said that they would help to protect children from the dangers of vaping.
However, some vaping groups have criticised the new vape measures, arguing that they will unfairly target legitimate businesses and that they will not be effective in preventing underage vaping.
It remains to be seen how effective the new measures will be in tackling the issue of underage vaping. However, the government is now beginning to take the issue seriously and is committed to taking action to protect children from the dangers of vaping.

UK Vape Restrictions
The UK government intends to introduce new laws restricting the sale of vapes, particularly to address the issue of underage vapers. Sales measures likely to be introduced in 2024 could include:
- Age verification checks: Mandatory ID checks at point of sale to prevent underage purchase.
- Flavour bans: Restricting the sale of e-liquids with flavours deemed appealing to young people, like sweets or fruit.
- Nicotine limitations: Reducing the maximum nicotine strength allowed in e-liquids.
- Online sales restrictions: Implementing stricter regulations for online vape sales.
The intention behind these restrictions is to curb the rising popularity of vaping among young people and its potential health risks. However, the specific details of the proposed laws are still being debated, and the final legislation is yet to be confirmed.
Vape Legislation
However, the path to legislative nirvana is rarely smooth. Critics argue that age verification checks could be easily circumvented and that flavour bans might push young people towards unregulated black markets. The vaping industry, predictably, is wary of regulations that could crimp its burgeoning business.
Despite the potential roadblocks, the government's resolve seems steeled. In the King's Speech outlining the legislative agenda, the Tobacco and Vapes Bill was touted as a crucial step towards "a smokefree generation." And with public opinion largely in favour of stricter controls, the proposed vaping laws may well find their way onto the statute books.
One thing is clear: the UK's war on youth vaping has entered a new phase. Whether the proposed laws successfully disarm the allure of vapes and shield young lungs from harm remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, the battle lines are drawn, and the future of vaping in the UK hangs in the balance.
